From an Idea to America's Tallest Digital Christmas Tree: The South Pole Illuminated Festival Story

In 2020, when most holiday events in the country were being canceled outright, McAllen needed a different kind of Christmas — one people could still safely experience together. Pollux Castor built the answer in 30 days: A Brighter Christmas Drive, a drive-through holiday lights experience conceived, branded, and launched from scratch during one of the hardest years the events industry has ever faced.

It worked. That first year drew 176,000 paid attendees, generated 38.7 million ad impressions, and delivered an estimated $15.9 million economic impact for the city — all from an idea that didn't exist a month before it opened!

From a Drive-Through Idea to a Signature Holiday Destination

That first campaign didn't just succeed — it became the foundation for what McAllen now knows as the South Pole Illuminated Festival, presented by H-E-B at the McAllen Convention Center every winter. What started as a pandemic-era drive-through has grown into a full walk-through festival featuring glowing lantern displays, illuminated light trails, live entertainment, and the centerpiece that gives the whole city something to talk about: America's tallest digital Christmas tree, towering over 100 feet with music, motion, and color synced together.

Behind that identity sat a full campaign build: strategic planning, creative direction, and media planning and buying across both Texas and Mexico — because MXLAN's audience doesn't stop at the border, and neither did the campaign.

Building a Brand To Return to Every Year
Pollux Castor's role has centered on the brand and the story around it — the identity, the creative direction, and the promotional push that turns a seasonal event into something families put on their calendar every year without being told to. That's meant TV, social, digital, radio, outdoor, and print campaigns working together under one consistent look and feel, refreshed each season to keep a now-established holiday tradition feeling new.

Why a 30-Day Idea Still Matters

The South Pole Illuminated Festival is proof of something simple: a strong brand built under real pressure can outlast the moment it was built for. What began as an emergency pivot during a global shutdown became a lasting piece of McAllen's identity — because the story behind it was strong enough to keep bringing people back long after the original reason for it was gone.

That's the same instinct behind every brand Pollux Castor builds, whether the deadline is 30 days or 30 weeks: find the idea worth returning to, then keep it looking, sounding, and feeling like something people want to be part of again.
