More Than a Race: The Story Behind the McAllen Marathon

Every January, thousands of runners line up at the McAllen Convention Center for one of the most meaningful races in the Rio Grande Valley — the McAllen Marathon Scott Crane Memorial Run. It's a USATF-certified course that qualifies runners for the Boston Marathon, drawing over 11,000 runners and spectators and generating an estimated $500,000+ in economic impact across the city's hotels, restaurants, and shops in a single weekend.

But the reason this race means as much as it does to McAllen isn't about the course times or the crowd size. It's about the person it's named for.

A Race Named in Honor of a Life Dedicated to Health

Scott Crane served McAllen as a City Commissioner for 3 terms and was known throughout the community as a passionate advocate for health and fitness. In 2014, during the marathon's second year, Crane fell ill while running the very race he'd championed, and the city lost him not long after. A year later, McAllen renamed the marathon in his honor. not as a somber gesture, but as a lasting tribute to the kind of life he encouraged everyone around him to live.

That's the story that sits underneath every finish line photo, every race-day banner, and every promotional spot Pollux Castor has helped bring to life for this event: a race that isn't just about running, but about honoring someone who believed a healthier community was worth showing up for.

Behind that identity sat a full campaign build: strategic planning, creative direction, and media planning and buying across both Texas and Mexico — because MXLAN's audience doesn't stop at the border, and neither did the campaign.

Building the Brand That Gets People to the Starting Line
Pollux Castor's work here has centered on the marathon's promotion and identity — the TV campaigns, the creative direction, and the messaging that turns "there's a marathon in January" into thousands of people actually registering, training, and showing up. That includes everything from full and half marathon promotion to the race's more accessible options — the 10K, 5K, six-person relay, and the McAllen Kids Marathon Final Mile — making sure the campaign speaks to serious Boston-qualifying runners and first-time 5K walkers alike.

Why This One Hits Differently

Most events sell an experience. This one sells a reason. The McAllen Marathon proves that the most powerful campaigns aren't always built around a product or a discount — sometimes they're built around a community's memory of someone who mattered, and a shared commitment to keep living the way that person would've wanted. That's a harder story to tell well, and an easier one to get wrong. Getting it right, year after year, is what this race, and the brand around it, is built on.
